The point of holding stemware has always left me wondering if I’ve made a manners faux pas and looking around the room at at recent event, I see I am not the only gal clutching her wine glass the wrong way. I do find comfort knowing there is a purpose to only holding the stem of a wine glass and not grasping the bowl, as you will see below.
I know I shall get some flak for this statement, but I’ve always found the sight of a person, male or female, brutishly clenching a beer bottle and taking a swig out of it most unattractive…
“Wine and champagne glasses with long stems should be held by the stem. This keeps the heat of the hand from warming the beverage.
Heavy water goblets or glasses with shorter stems must be held by the bowl of the glass to keep the glass balanced when raising it to the mouth.”
